London, fine dining, affordable prices, good seating, fabulous service, delicious food! These seem to be the key lookout points when dining in London, it goes without saying that the city is a very expensive city and for many reasons for backup. However, nothing is more solid and satisfying than dining at a super creative and beautifully set interior, especially if it has low lighting. Just perfect. Last Christmas when I was in London, as tradition on Christmas eve, my family and I head out to dinner and I believe this year, we overdid it, but in the kind of sense that we got everything just absolutely right.
Located in a little off Camden High Street to Camden Stables Market is a fabulous Pan-Asian restaurant – Gilgamesh. On entrance, I was completely blow away, that a place as this actually existed in Camden. Now don´t get me wrong, I like Camden — worked there for a year and it has been up and coming (for as long as I can remember), so potentially, this is a great district. To top it all off, it has a fabulous flea market that goes on all day everyday, and you can purchase just about anything you need. The one thing I didn´t expect (only because I have never seen it or come across it) is this equally fabulous restaurant to add to Camden´s never ending charm. It has a charming stylish bar, dinner is served glamorous behind the seating area and everything is all mysteriously intriguing. It´s the kind of space that gets your ooohs and ahhhhs going all night long. Uniquely Perfect.
The 6 of us sit at a high round table, nothing central which is great but the attention is no doubt on us, this table is very big, round and next to the Christmas Tree. Our waiter tells us we are lucky because reservations for this particular table were cancelled and to that we can only beam with a little pride and thank our Lucky stars (because my sister´s first option was a rather awful place). I know I am immediately in love with the decor and I just can´t help myself. There´s a jazz song playing in the background over diners voices and we catch ourselves singing along and without saying a word, we know this is going to be an awesome dinner. I´m glad and thankful.
Many of us choose to go with a Thai based curry – Green of course with boiled rice and the curry is beyond what I thought. I´m not sure if you are ever one of those people in a restaurant, first time at a particular restaurant so you´re not familiar with the setting and space and food. You are easily drawn in and accepting of the atmosphere but can´t help wondering if the food will be up to expectation. In a place like this, a setting this gorgeous, I am anticipating our dinner and hoping it will be anything but ridiculously delicious otherwise imagine the disappointment. I feel that dinning outside of your own house is risky business, because something simple like food could be the death of a restaurant, in fact, sadly might be the rather dramatic end to one´s life to a restaurant. Luckily for us, and thankful to the staff and chef at Gilgamesh, all was intact. A definite recommendation from me, if ever visiting London / Camden
